Ceramic Tiles

Why Choose Ceramic Tiles?

Dense and versatile, ceramic tiles are ideal for most rooms in the home, when treated or sealed as necessary. There are ceramic tiles for every budget – even the very small ones!

Use large tiles if you want the room to look bigger, as there will be fewer grout lines. However, bowing is a characteristic of large format rectangle tiles. Bowing is a slight curve in the tile whereby the surface is not perfectly flat. This characteristic is more noticeable when the tiles are laid brick bond or in a staggered pattern. Use a grout joint of 2mm and the grout joints should be aligned. Tile Giant staff can advise you about this.

Once you decide to get unglazed for your ceramic tile flooring, you would have to get it sealed so it will be protected. The grout is typically made from sand and cement, but there are times that silicone is used. The combination of sand and cement is more difficult to clean compared to the silicone. But if you take time for cleaning ceramic tile grout, you will have no problems with cleaning it.

Ceramic tiles are:

  • Very easy to work with
  • Ideal in a bathroom because they are so easy to clean
  • Hard-wearing and need little or no maintenance
  • Available in a great range of colours and designs
  • Perfect with mosaic borders
  • Fresh, clean and stylish-looking
  • Not suitable for outdoors because they have a glazed surface that can be slippy and are not frost proof when used on exterior floors & walls
  • Not as hard-wearing as porcelain tiles
  • Not suitable in areas of high foot traffic

We provide specialised cleaning solutions for hard floors, particularly ceramic, tile and grout surfaces.

When we think about ceramic tiles, we usually think of the common glazed ceramic tiles that are used in kitchens and bathrooms throughout the world. In fact, while glazed tiles are often referred to simply as 'ceramic tiles', their unglazed counterparts are almost always referred to as 'unglazed ceramic tiles'. What's the difference between them? And how do you choose between glazed vs unglazed ceramic tiles?

Glazing is the only real difference between glazed and unglazed tiles. After the ceramic tiles are fired, a thin coat of liquefied glass is applied over the top surface. The glass is what makes glazed tiles so highly moisture and stain resistant and what gives them their colour. Unglazed ceramic tiles, while not as stain resistant as glazed tiles, are not as slippery. This is one of the reasons why they are a better choice in certain situations.

The "verdict" is really up to you. Glazed and unglazed ceramic tiles each have their advantages and disadvantages, but in both cases, their disadvantages can be overcome. While unglazed tiles are less stain resistant than their "rivals," this disadvantage can be overcome by the application of a good sealant. Glazed ceramic tiles have the disadvantage of being more slippery when wet than unglazed, but this can be largely overcome by purchasing textured surface tiles.

Aesthetically, both glazed and unglazed ceramic tiles have strong appeal. It is mostly a matter of what appeals to you the most. The only way to reach an unbiased verdict is to find a tile supplier near you and take a look at their entire range of glazed and unglazed ceramic tiles. They can fill you in on all the details and ensure that you pick a tile that is both visually appealing and practical.

The Hard Surface Flooring market has more than doubled in Australia in the past ten years, with the fastest growing market segment in hard surface floors being Ceramic Tile.

The HydroForce SX-12, SX-7 and Gekko Hard Surface Cleaning tools can safely and effectively clean most, if not all of these floors. They do a far superior job to any other kind of tool or process of cleaning.

Always test an area first to obtain best results. Glazed wall or floor tile or through the use of a floor-scrubbing machine. Mop nature and require a different maintenance program than cons up dirty solution and buff dry.

Another commonly used product in kitchen flooring is of course, ceramic tiles. Primarily made from clay and various other natural minerals and materials, these tiles get their strength once exposed to extreme heat. Glazed ceramic tiles are a popular option these days due their durability, water and scratch resistance.

Ceramic tiles are not suitable for outdoors because they have a glazed surface that can be slippy and are not frost proof when used on exterior floors & walls. They are not as hard-wearing as porcelain tiles and not suitable in areas of high foot traffic.

Originally ceramic tiles were hand-made, thus each was a work of art in its own right. Ceramic tiles were used almost everywhere - on walls, floors, ceilings, fireplaces, in murals, and as an exterior cladding on buildings. Today of course most ceramic tiles are automatically manufactured.

What is Ceramic Tile?

Clay mud, when dried and then "Fired", melts together forming a solid, hardened mass. Over the centuries people have learned to form the clay into tiles (thin square or other shapes) to be used for decoration or protection. Tiles can be painted using a colored, powdered glass compound, then "Fired" again to cause the glass to melt to the surface of the tile. The "glazed" surface resists moisture and staining and works as a floor or wall surface because of those traits and the fact that it doesn't wear out very fast.

Cleaning the ceramic tile surface is usually not too difficult but cleaning the grout lines is generally the most difficult aspect of cleaning ceramic tiles. Ceramic tile is a durable and decorative surface covering. The grout between tiles, however, can be a dirt and mildew magnet. Cleaning ceramic tile grout is not particularly difficult, but it can be tedious and require a bit of elbow grease. There are a number of commercial and home cleaners that make the job easier, but keep in mind that each method has its positives and negatives.

Cleaning ceramic tile can be a huge pain for anyone who isn't using the right tools. Don't waste unnecessary time cleaning ceramic tile by hand. With our cleaning machines and equipment it has never been easier to achieve the sparkling clean that you want and others will notice.

Our Ceramic Tile Restoration service will bring back your Ceramic tiles & grout to its best possible condition, and protect them for years to come.

I noticed that some of the tiles in my bathroom walls were loose and the grout was coming off. I am a very busy so kept on postponing calling someone to fix it. One day I got home and the loose tiles were lying broken on the floor. Can you imagine my frustration? I rang my brother in panic and he gave me Tile Cleaners' contact details. I rang them straight away. The guys told me I needed a tiler and professional regrouting work done so I thought it would take ages to fix my problem. However they organized the work very well. I had my tiles fixed on Friday night the same week and the entire bathroom regrouted on Saturday. Thank you some much for your quick help; it was such a relief.
