What is Ceramic Tile?

Ceramic Tile Cleaning AdelaideClay mud, mixed with various other natural minerals and materials, when dried and then "Fired", melts together forming a solid, hardened mass. Over the centuries people have learned to form the clay into tiles (thin square or other shapes) to be used for decoration or protection. Tiles can be painted using a colored, powdered glass compound, then "Fired" again to cause the glass to melt to the surface of the tile. The "glazed" surface resists moisture and staining and works as a floor or wall surface because of those traits and the fact that it doesn't wear out very fast.

The term "ceramic tile" is often used as a generic name for all types of man made tile. But the composition of true ceramic is very different from that of the other types. Since ceramic material is porous, the top surface is usually sealed with a glaze. The glazed surface is referred to as the design layer since it determines the tile's finished color, design and texture. Glazed ceramic tiles are a popular option these days due their durability, water and scratch resistance. However, not all ceramic tiles are glazed.

Originally ceramic tiles were hand-made, thus each was a work of art in its own right. Ceramic tiles were used almost everywhere - on floors, walls, ceilings, fireplaces, in murals, and as an exterior cladding on buildings. Today of course most ceramic tiles are automatically manufactured in mass quantities and are relatively low in price compared to other types of tiles.

Ceramic tile is categorized in many different ways. At the most basic level, tiles come either glazed or unglazed. With unglazed tile, the color runs throughout the tile body. The color can be the natural earth tone of the clay itlsef, or the color of a pigment that has been added to it before firing. Glazed tiles, on the other hand, have color which has been added to the surface of the tile. The color is applied to the tile after firing. The tile is then fired again to bond the glaze to the clay body. Glazed tiles range from a high gloss to a dull matte finish, and come in a much wider range of colors, patterns and surface textures.

Glazed Ceramic Tiles

Glazed ceramic tile is very durable, and when properly installed and cared for, it will last longer than any non-tile material used for the same purpose. It is also one of the easiest surfaces to clean, and because of its composition, it will not absorb odors, nor support allergens or bacteria. When coated with a Grade III or higher glaze, ceramic tile is highly resistant to scratching and moisture. Another important feature is that it will not burn, emit toxic fumes or scorch.

Cleaning Ceramic Tiles

A lot of people want to have ceramic tiles in their home because of its remarkable look. However, they do not like the cleaning ceramic tile floors. This is because ceramic tiles can be hard to clean, particularly in the grouts and cracks. But once you do find the appropriate techniques, methods and products for cleaning, you will find that it is easy to keep your ceramic tiles clean and in great shape. Due to the increasing popularity of several technological advancements and innovations, easy cleaning for ceramic tiles is made possible. When you use these mentioned advancements, you will find that your work will be made easier and less strenuous. The tiles that may be used for your ceramic tile flooring can either be small or big. The tiles are produced from clays that are then baked at extremely high temperatures, which cause strong and good-looking flooring. It may also be glazed or unglazed. Out of the two, the former is easier to clean up for the latter tends to be porous and easily holds dirt within them, thus giving people a hard time in cleaning it.

Cleaning the ceramic tile surface is usually not too difficult but cleaning the grout lines is generally the most difficult aspect of cleaning ceramic tiles. Ceramic tile is a durable and decorative surface covering. The grout between tiles, however, can be a dirt and mildew magnet. Cleaning ceramic tile grout is not particularly difficult, but it can be tedious and require a bit of elbow grease. There are a number of commercial and home cleaners that make the job easier, but keep in mind that each method has its positives and negatives.

Cleaning ceramic tile can be a huge pain for anyone who isn't using the right tools. Don't waste unnecessary time cleaning ceramic tile by hand. With our cleaning machines and equipment it has never been easier to achieve the sparkling clean that you want and others will notice.

Our Ceramic Tile Restoration service will bring back your Ceramic tiles & grout to its best possible condition. We cover all Adelaide suburbs.

Our grout sealing service for glazed Ceramic tiles will protect the grout lines between your ceramic tiles for years to come, while making them easier to maintaine.

Sealing Ceramic Tiles

We often get asked to recommend a sealer for Ceramic Tiles, the simple answer is if they are glazed then the tiles themselves don't need one, but the grout lines should always be sealed with a water based impregnating penetrating sealer. However if your Ceramic tiles are porous then we recommend you seal the tiles with an impregnating penetrating water based sealer.

Once you decide to get unglazed ceramic tile for your flooring, you would have to get it sealed so it will be protected. The grout is typically made from sand and cement, but there are times that silicone is used. The combination of sand and cement is more difficult to clean compared to the silicone. But if you take time for cleaning ceramic tile grout, you will have no problems with cleaning it.

Ceramic Tile Care

Cleaning ceramic tile is not too difficult if you use the correct cleaning products and procedures. Using improper cleaning products and techniques can actually harm your ceramic tiles as well as the grout.

Cleaning ceramic tile requires the four basic components necessary for cleaning any surface.  In the cleaning industry the acronym for these four cleaning components is TACT and they stand for:

  1. Temperature: The higher the temperature the more effective your cleaning process will be.
  2. Agitation: Agitation of the surface is necessary to generate effective cleaning results.
  3. Chemicals: The proper cleaning products for the surface to be cleaned.
  4. Time:  The longer the cleaning products are allowed to work on the dirt and stains the better your cleaning results will be.

Here are some tile care tips on maintaining your ceramic tile:

  • Purchase a good quality dust mop and sweep your ceramic tile floors daily. This is especially important in new installations where the grout has not fully cured. Dirt, mud, and sand tend to ground into the grout mortar from heavy foot traffic.
  • Dirt collecting carpet mats should be placed in frequently used entrances and shaked out weekly.
  • Shower stall and tub enclosures should have proper ventilation. Stagnant water breeds stain causing mildew as well as other fungi. All inside and outside corners of shower walls, curbs, and sills, should be caulked with a siliconize mildew resistant caulk.
  • Mop or sponge your tile down 2 to 3 times weekly. Mix 1 capful of dishwashing liquid per gallon of hot water. Mop up excess water and allow to dry. Buffing with a dry towel will help to reduce spotting.

Glazed Ceramic Tiles are Easy to Maintain, however the grout lines should always be sealed to protect from discoloration as well as keep them easy to maintain.

Getting White Grout Clean

For white or light colored grout or for particularly tough mold or mildew stains, consider bleach. You can purchase a bleach-based cleaner or mix a 50/50 solution of bleach and water to clean stubborn grout stains.

When using bleach or bleach-based cleaners, be sure to have proper ventilation to remove harmful fumes. Also, be sure to wear gloves and older clothing. Never mixed bleach-based cleaners with other substances; toxic fumes can be generated from these types of mixtures.

A Mild Grout Cleaning Alternative

Another alternative grout cleaning solution is hydrogen peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide is an effective grout cleaner that doesn't produce odors. As an added benefit, hydrogen peroxide is the perfect cleaner for those with allergies or sensitivities to harsh chemicals. Simply apply some hydrogen peroxide to your grout and allow it to sit for several minutes. Brush the treated grout and then rinse with a damp cloth or mop.

  • Q: How long does the estimate take?
  • A: In most cases, we can give you an approximate quote / estimate over the phone within 5 - 10 minutes. We will also inspect the area and confirm the quote on the day the job is booked for to get your final approval prior to starting any work.
  • Q: Once decided, how long will it take to schedule the work on my grout?
  • A: Most of our work can be scheduled within 2 – 10 days, and is usually done on the same day we come out to confirm the quote.
  • Q: What type of grout cleaner is used?
  • A: Tile Cleaners ® Adelaide uses a low pressure / hot water system to clean your grout. The vapor system will heat water to high degrees (up to 320 degrees) cleaning your grout with vapor technology using tap water leaving your grout in a PH neutral state.
  • Q: Do you use chemical cleaners?
  • A: Some cleaning situations require pre-treatment using a chemical cleaner. Our chemical cleaner contains no acid or bleach as these ingredients can do long term damage to your grout. The solution is then followed by our vapor technology removing the discoloration and any chemical residue from the grout joint. However in some cases we will need to use chemicals that do contain some little amount of bleach or acid when the grout is old and discolored.
  • Q: Why use grout cleaner and vapor cleaning?
  • A: The vapor cleaning process eliminates the cleaner from the pores of the joint leaving it in a PH neutral state.
  • Q: Why not just scrub the grout with a brush and mop it clean?
  • A: The mopping of excess cleaner is not completely absorbed leaving the cleaner in the pores of the grout. The cleaner will disrupt the PH level of the floor creating a dirt magnet after completion.
  • Q: Do you use a truck mounted cleaning machine?
  • A: Sometimes, depending on the size and nature of the work required. The truck mounted equipment generates pressure between 1500 – 3000 psi so we adjust the pressure depending on the type of tile and grout you have, otherwise the amount of pressure generated will create small cracks in the joint along with exploiting existing cracks if the wrong pressure is used.
  • Q: What is grout recoloring?
  • A: Recoloring grout is the application of a grout colorant to completely change or enhance the color of your grout.
  • Q: Why recolor my grout?
  • A: In some circumstances, your existing grout can be soiled to the point it will not clean well enough to be acceptable. Grout can also fade if exposed to excessive foot traffic or sunlight making it impossible to eliminate color variations in your grout.
  • Q: Can grout recoloring make my grout lighter?
  • A: Yes, your existing grout can be re-colored to a lighter or darker shade of your existing grout or a different color altogether to match your changing decor.
  • Q: Can you tell if the grout has been recolored?
  • A: The recoloring process will leave your grout looking brand new eliminating any color variations. The color sealer used is a penetrating color sealer leaving the grout in its natural state as it bonds to the silica in the grout joint. Some color sealers on the market are a topical that will cause your grout to look painted in its completed state.

Testimonials

I was about to sell my business and wanted to clean and reseal my vinyl floors to improve the looks of them before having people over for inspection of the property. I did a booking with another company but was horrified when I realized that my floor was back to its horrible look in less than two weeks. I carefully looked up other cleaning companies, scared that I would chose the wrong cleaning company. A friend of mine recommended Tile Cleaners, but after what happened to my floor last time I got it cleaned I was really skeptic, but gave it a go. All I can say is thank you guys so much for a quick response and a good job. I sold the office and left your contact details with the new owner for future cleaning.
